Interconnect - the model for inter-company settlements outside of the USA

The rest of the world has Interconnect billing which parses the call so that all carriers of the call can be compensated for the portion they carry. The interconnect portion is from switch to switch or Originating POI to Terminating POI. This portion is usually handled through high capacity trunks or circuits, by long distance carriers that aggregate the traffic at the switch and send it out via trunks over the appropriate routing to the termination tandem for connection to the terminating user. The routing of this call can vary depending on cost of bandwidth, capacity available, or special arrangements made between long distance companies.

As the call goes from country to country or carrier to carrier, the compensation becomes more complex. Sometimes, thousands of rates must be stored for calculation of the compensation to all providers of the call service.

There are three main methods of revenue sharing within the Interconnect model: direct billing, cascade billing, and the traditional International Telecommunications Union (ITU) settlement process.

Direct Billing Model

Direct billing enables the costs associated with a call to be allocated by the originating operator directly among a number of organizations.

Cascade Billing Model

In the cascade billing method, each operator in a chain pays or charges only the “downstream” or “upstream” operators respectively.
